Washing your lace wig is extremely important if you want it to last long and look good, while conditioning will give it a soft feel and a glimmering appeal. Your lace wig should be thoroughly washed and conditioned preferably once a week or once every two weeks to avoid excessive wear.
All you need to start with is a wide tooth comb and a mannequin or a foam wig head and you are on your way. Foam wig heads are more convenient to use as they are light weight and the wig can be secured onto it using pins.
1. First comb through the hair in straight strokes from the end of the hair and work your way up, this will remove tangles and knots.
2. Place the wig in the sink, still on the mannequin and saturate it with warm water.
3. Pour your shampoo into a spray bottle with water and spray the shampoo onto the hair instead of applying it directly.
4. Gently run your fingers through the hair. Do not rub it into the unit as this will cause it to tangle.
5. Gently rinse the shampoo from the unit by placing it under a stream of water and massaging it down towards toward the ends of the hair
Your unit is now clean and is ready for conditioning. To condition, apply deep conditioner in the same manner as shampooing using a spray bottle. Allow the conditioner to work on the hair for about ten minutes. Use luke warm water to rinse the conditioner out, never use hot water. Ensure that all residue has been removed thoroughly.
When you are sure that all the conditioner has been rinsed out, gently squeeze the hair to remove the water. This is to be done gradually and very careful to avoid tangling. Use a soft absorbent hand towel or cloth to remove excess water by carefully rubbing it through the hair. Do this slowly and thoroughly to ensure all the water is gone and you do not end up with a tangled mop of hair.
You can lay your unit on a dry towel to dry instead of hanging it to dry. Laying it out will preserve the shape of your unit. Do not use a hair dryer or any heat source to dry the wig as this will heat up the water on the unit and could damage the wig. Comb out any tangles using the wide tooth comb. After your unit is now dry, you can also use a flat iron or a curling tongs to style it to your preference.
Dry Hair: Humectants are compounds that help in retention of moisture in hair and moisturising conditioners or deep conditioners that contain humectants work well on dry or damaged hair. Conditioners which contain dimethicone, panthenol or silicone and essential oils such as jojoba oil also help in adding gloss to dry hair.
Oily Hair: Conditioners which are oil free are the ideal choice for oily hair. If the hair has a tendency to become extra greasy, look for acidifying conditioners and conditioners which have tea-tree oil that help in absorbing the extra oil and prevent the hair from being weighed down.
Curly / Coarse Hair: Ultra-moisturizing and creamy conditioners that contain humectants and compounds such as cetyl or stearyl alcohol, panthenol, methicones and botanical products such as shea butter and avocado help smooth out coarse hair, untangle frizz and soften curly hair making it more manageable.
Fine / Limp Hair: Protein conditioners or volumising conditioners are the ideal products to choose for fine or limp hair. These conditioners coat the hair shafts with protein giving the hair a fuller and smoother look.
Colored/Treated Hair: Rich and thick conditioners that help in retention of hair color are recommended in the management of treated hair. Conditioners that contain silicone are better avoided as they tend to strip the color from hair, making it look dull and lifeless.
Dry Hair: Egg shampoos, shampoos with softeners and protein components are recommended for dry hair. Dry hair needs shampoos which are creamy and not clear, have mild detergents and rich conditioners and hence shampoos which have shea butter or lanolin seem to help manage dry hair better. Herbs like comfrey which is rich in protein when present in shampoos helps to make hair look thicker and smoother.
Oily Hair: Citric juice or malic acid component in shampoos helps manage oily hair better. Other desirable ingredients in shampoos for oily hair are chamomile, tea tree oil and sage oil. Protein and balsam shampoos are not recommended for oily hair as they tend to increase the oiliness. A drop of patchouli essential oil when added to shampoo helps reduce sebum production.
Curly / Coarse Hair: Creamy moisturizing shampoos come highly recommended in the management of curly or coarse hair. Shampoos containing wheat germ oil, shea butter and nut oils such as macadamia nut oil or even coconut oil are good for curly hair. Protein based shampoos and shampoos with silicone or almond oil help detangle and soothe out frizziness.
Fine / Limp Hair: Clear and gentle shampoos are ideal for fine or limp hair. Shampoos containing panthenol are considered the best for fine hair as it helps in making hair strands look thicker. Ingredients such as glycerine or collagen in shampoos help maintain moisture balance. Using clarifying shampoos and shampoos with lesser amount of conditioning agents helps manage fine hair better and makes it look less oily.
Colored/Treated Hair: Colored hair needs to be washed with color protection shampoos that can help preserve the color and retain moisture as well. Moisturizing shampoos with gentle cleansers are advised for permed, relaxed or colored hair. Color enhancing shampoos and shampoos with UV filters help in maintaining the color as well.
